The days following the move-in
Organizing in the days following the move
- Define what should stay at home for use and what can be stored.
- Unpack first those objects that are essential to the functioning of the house.
- If possible, tidy one room of the house at a time. If you have packed the objects by room, it will be much easier to unpack.
- Take advantage of the boxes already used but in good condition, to store objects you want to store. Place the rest in the recycling container.
Cleaning
- There are many companies that provide this type of service. Usually, they do general cleanings, after construction or moving.
- After the move and the organization…
- Clean the house of all the moving packaging.
- Proceed with the cleaning as you put things in their respective places.
- You can do a second general cleaning when everything is in place.
- Once you are settled, consider hiring a cleaning lady for the weekly cleaning of the house. Check with a neighbor.
In the new home
- Change the locks of the new house. Most security experts advise to do so.
- Make the small repairs and renovations that you had prepared for the new house.
- Find out (in local shops, with neighbors) if someone in the vicinity goes to the house to do small repairs. Keep his phone number always at hand.
- Start looking for a cleaning lady for the weekly cleaning of the house. Ask your neighbors for help, if necessary.
- Arrange your things quickly, to quickly create a familiar and pleasant atmosphere.
- Find out about the condominium (who is the administrator, when are the meetings, etc.).
The new neighbors
- Strive to win over your neighbors, who after all are the people physically closest to you and your family.
- Place a brief and friendly personal presentation letter in the mailboxes.
- Inquire with them about issues you have about the neighborhood or the building.
- Seek advice from them on issues related to the building or the neighborhood.
The surroundings
- To get acquainted with the new neighborhood, take a “reconnaissance” walk as soon as possible.
- If you have enrolled your children in a new school, closer to home, show them where it is and decide the path they will take daily from home to there.
- Look for a gym and a video club.
- Discover a shopping center and make a round through the stores.
- See the location of cafes, supermarkets, grocery stores and restaurants.
- Look for a veterinarian (preferably, that is open 24 hours for emergencies).
- If you have animals, look for a place where you can take them for a walk regularly.
- Take a car ride to get to know the streets well.
- Try public transport to see how often they pass and if they usually go very crowded or not.
- If you have small children, look for a nearby green space or a playground.
